How to get your business named in ChatGPT and Google’s AI

The short answer

AI assistants name the local businesses they can find clear, consistent facts about: a complete Google Business Profile, a page for the service and area someone asks about, recent reviews with replies, and the same name, address and phone everywhere.

Nobody can guarantee a mention. You earn it with the same work as local SEO, then check the answers each month by asking ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI the questions your customers ask.

Seven things that get you named

Each one gives an assistant a clear fact it can repeat.

  1. 01
    Your details the same everywhere

Your business name, address and phone number match on your website, your Google listing and directories such as Yellow Pages, True Local, hipages, Localsearch and Yelp.

  2. 02
    A complete Google Business Profile

Categories, services, hours and photos filled in and kept current. What matters on your Business Profile.

  3. 03
A page for each service and area

Each page says what you do and where in its first sentence. That’s the line an assistant can quote, and the page it can cite.

  4. 04
    Recent reviews, with replies

Ask recent customers for a review in a neutral way, and reply to each one. Google’s rules ban offering anything for a review and asking only the customers you expect to be happy.

  5. 05
Real job photos, with a line each

A photo of the finished job with one plain sentence about it gives an assistant something specific to say about you.

  6. 06
Structured data that describes one business

Markup on your site that states your name, services and areas the same way every time, so you read as one clear business.

  7. 07
Let AI crawlers read your site

Check your site doesn’t block the crawlers AI tools use. For its own AI features, Google says there are “no additional requirements” beyond normal good practice (Google Search Central).

How to check whether you’re named

Ask the assistants the questions your customers ask, the same way, every month.

A monthly check you can do yourself
AssistantWhat to askWhat to record
ChatGPTA real customer question with your trade and area, such as “Who’s a good bricklayer near Bakewell for a block retaining wall?”Named or not, where in the list, and which sites it cites.
GeminiThe same question, word for word.Named or not, and what it says about you.
PerplexityThe same question, word for word.Named or not, and the sources it links.
Google AI Overviews and AI ModeSearch the question in Google, then open AI Mode.Whether the AI summary names you, and which pages it links.

Name the area in the question, or ask from the area you serve. Keep a simple monthly record so you can see what changed after each piece of work.

What an answer looks like

When an assistant names you, it usually shows where it got the facts. This is the work AI SEO covers.

Who’s a good bricklayer near Bakewell for a block retaining wall?

AI answer

For a block retaining wall near Bakewell, these local bricklayers come up most:

  1. 1
    Ash Huskisson Masonry (Darwin)

Brick, block and retaining walls across Darwin and Palmerston. Recent job photos on their Google listing.

    ahmasonry.com.au/bakewell
  2. 2
    Dunmoray Masonry (Durack)

    Fences, letterboxes and small walls.

Other businesses are made up.

  1. Named first

One clear business, with the same facts everywhere the assistant looks.

  2. Recent job photos on the listing

Your Google listing kept current, so the answer has something real to say.

  3. A page for the area

The Bakewell page is the source the assistant cites.

What to avoid

If someone offers any of these, ask more questions.

1

Anyone guaranteeing an AI mention

Nobody controls what an assistant says. Google says “no one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google”, and the same is true of AI answers.

2

llms.txt sold as a ranking fix

It’s a small file some sites add for AI tools. It won’t hurt, but it isn’t a switch that gets you named (Google on its AI features).

3

Paid or fake reviews

Google’s rules ban offering anything in return for a review, and asking only the customers you expect to be happy.

4

A copy-paste page for every suburb

Google warns that mass-produced, low-value pages break its spam policy on scaled content (Google Search Central). One useful page per area you really work in is better.

5

Stuffing keywords into your business name

Google’s guidelines say your listing name should match your real-world name, with no service or product information added.

Where SEOrted fits

Your SEO team does all seven for you, checks every change before it goes live, and measures the bigger ones over 28 days to see whether they worked.

There are tools if you’d rather do it yourself: BabyLoveGrowth tracks prompts in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, and Search Atlas tracks AI visibility on its Growth and Pro plans.

If you’re a bigger business with your own marketing team, you’ll probably be better served elsewhere. See what’s included in A$749 a month.

Questions people ask

01

How do I rank highly on ChatGPT?

There’s no fixed ranking list to climb. ChatGPT names the businesses it finds clear, consistent facts about.

The seven steps above are how you give it those facts. Then ask it your customers’ questions each month and note whether you’re named.

02

How long until AI names my business?

There’s no set timeline.

It depends on what’s already published about you and how much needs to change. We don’t promise a date, and you should be wary of anyone who does.

03

Does llms.txt help?

It’s low priority. It won’t hurt, but it isn’t a switch that gets you named.

For Google’s AI features, Google says there are “no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode” (Google Search Central).

04

Is there an AI that can do SEO?

Some of it. Tools can draft and track, but someone still has to check the facts.

Google says it is “critical to manually factcheck and review all AI-generated content” (Google Search Central). How AI SEO works with your team.
